August 19th, 2008

Imagine finding yourself in a close conversation with someone and suddenly you become aware that the person you are talking with has atrocious smelling breath. Feeling nauseous, you want the conversation to end as you fight hard not to make a expression of total disgust.

It is natural for involuntary responses to take over in this very delicate situation. Escape becomes your number one priority from the foul, offensive odor. Halitosis ,or bad breath as it is commonly known, is difficult to deal with but it is important that it is delt with.

Responsibility Belongs To All

So how do we address the problem of bad breath? The first step is our own personal responsibility to the health of our teeth.
The practice of good oral hygiene will greatly reduce the chances of bad breath and must be preformed not only for yourself but as a courtesy to others. No one should have to suffer from anothers lack of personal care. A person suffering from halitosis should ackowlede the fact and take the steps necessary to correct the problem. Remember, if simple self-care techniques do not solve the problem, you may want to see your dentist to be sure a more serious condition isn’t causing your bad breath.

Seeking Consult With Others

Often the basis for many jokes, Halitosis, or Bad Breath as it is most commonly known,is not only an embarrassing condition but may potentially be the evidence of a other health related problems. When you or someone you know has bad breath it is important to address the situation rather than ignore it and hope others do the same. Telling someone they have bad breath, though difficult as it may be, could actually save their life.

One of the easiest ways to handle the situation is to offer the other person a piece of gum or a mint. This can be an ice breaker that will help you to open up a conversation on the subject of bad breath and the serious health issues associated with it.All though this may be a hard thing to do it isimportant that it is done.

In conclusion, it is necessary to understand that certain foods, health conditions and habits are among the causes of bad breath. With proper dental hygiene you can improve the impact of bad breath. And remember,if simple self care techniques don’t solve the problem, you may want to see your dentist to be sure a more serious condition is not causing your bad breath.
