Take Persistent Gum Bleeding Seriously!

May 29th, 2008

Yes, bleeding gums is a serious problem. It is either indicating the
beginning of the destructive process involving the supporting tissue
around the tooth or some serious underlying systemic problems. Gum
disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly
forms on the teeth. These bacteria create toxins that damage the gums.
However, persistent gum bleeding
may be due to serious medical conditions such as leukemia and bleeding
and platelet disorders. Bleeding gums are mainly due to inadequate
plaque removal from the teeth at the gum line. This will lead to a
condition called gingivitis, or inflamed gums. It is important to
follow the instructions from your dentist in order to maintain healthy
gums. Improper brushing and flossing technique may actually irritate or
traumatize the gum tissue.
