Preventing Gingivitis For Healthier Smiles

March 9th, 2008

Gingivitis is usually caused by bacterial plaque that accumulates in
the small gaps between the gums and the teeth and in tartar that forms
on the teeth. These accumulations may be tiny, but the bacteria in them
produce foreign chemicals and toxins that cause inflammation of the
gums around the teeth. This inflammation can, over the years, cause
deep pockets between the teeth and gums and loss of bone around teeth
otherwise known as periodontitis. The sudden onset of gingivitis in a
normal, healthy person should be considered an alert to the possibility
of an underlying viral aetiology, although most systemically healthy
individuals have gingivitis in some area of their mouth, usually due to
inadequate brushing and flossing. Preventing gingivitis
can be through regular oral hygiene that includes daily brushing and
flossing. Rigorous plaque control programmes along with periodontal
scaling and curettage also have proved to be helpful.

Stop Receding Gums From Taking Over

March 9th, 2008

Dental threats are always present in the mouth. Gum recession, commonly known as receding gums,
is a common problem in adults over the age of 40, but may also occur
starting from the teens. If overactive brushing is the source of the
problem, the patient should consider purchasing a softer toothbrush and
be more gentle when brushing the receding areas. Because of its limited
capacity to regenerate, gum tissue lost as a result of overzealous
brushing is permanently lost. In cases of severe recession, dentists
can perform an operation to graft tissue from one part of the mouth to
cover the exposed areas. Be aware of your dental health, and secure
your teeth and gums health by doing what you can for them.
