The Basics of Rheumatoid Arthritis

April 5th, 2008

According to the Arthritis Foundation, an estimated 67 million
Americans will have some form of arthritis by 2030. Arthritis is a
general term that refers to a condition that causes inflammation in a
joint, which is characterized by redness, warmth, swelling, and pain
within the joint.

Specifically, rheumatoid arthritis is a type
of chronic arthritis that normally occurs in joints on both sides of
the body, such as hands, wrists, or knees. The symmetry of this
condition helps to distinguish it from other types of arthritis. In
addition to affecting the joints, rheumatoid arthritis may also affect
the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood, or nerves.

Understanding and Living with Psoriasis

April 4th, 2008

At one time described as a variety of leprosy, psoriasis is probably
one of the longest known illnesses of humans and the least understood.
While its confusion with leprosy may not have been all that surprising,
considering its visual appearance on the skin, it was not until 1841
that the condition was finally given its own name by a Viennese
dermatologist.

The non-contagious disease, which affects the
skin and joints and commonly causes red scaly patches on the skin, are
caused by psoriatic plaques, or areas of inflammation and excessive
skin production. As the skin rapidly accumulates at these sites, it
takes on a silvery-white appearance. It occurs most frequently on the
elbows, knees, scalp, and genitals. Psoriasis is surmised to be
activated by abnormal activity of the body’s immune system. The chronic
condition is recurring and varies in its severity. According to the
National Institutes of Health, it is estimated that nearly 7.5 million
American suffer from psoriasis.

Short People May Be More Prone To Arthritis

February 1st, 2008

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and this
degenerative joint disease found mostly among older people, primarily
affects cartilage. A study conducted by an international team supported
in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has discovered that
shorter people are more prone to arthritis.
According to the researchers a variety of factors that include
genetics, prenatal environment and diet, work in coherence to determine
how tall someone grows. It was predicted that genetic variants that
reduce production of the GDF5 protein may affect the amount of
cartilage in the spine, the proportion of limbs and/or the angles of
joints, resulting in both a modest decrease in height and increased
susceptibility to osteoarthritis.
