Pain in the Wrist: Dequervains Tendonitis

May 18th, 2007

One of the more distressing types of tendonitis is tendonitis of the wrist. In the medical community it is referred to Dequervains Tendonitis. It occurs on the side of the wrist, and is usually the result of rigorous movement of the thumb.

Dequervains Tendonitis is characterized by a shooting pain on the side of the thumb and forearm. This condition shows up and people who are in occupations, which require extensive use of the hands, especially activities that require dexterity. In general tendonitis tends to manifest itself as we get older and the tendons become less elastic. As we age, we are more prone, then, to strain and injury. And this is true with all types of tendonitis.

The first efforts at treatment involve resting the affected area, in this case, the wrist and forearm. Application of ice to the swollen area daily for at least 15 minutes daily is also recommended. Using over the counter pain relievers such as aspirin or ibuprofen also may help. If the case is more severe, a physician may prescribe wearing a wrist splint or brace.

In the most severe cases of Dequervains Tendonitis surgery may be indicated as a last resort. Fortunately, wrist tendonitis usually can be treated successfully with the home remedies suggested above.
