Quick Facts: Child Constipation Not Always Obvious

September 3rd, 2008

With
pain in the stomach, difficulty or pain when having a bowel movement,
and several days passing between such movements, most people have no
problem knowing when they have constipation. Most people will not
tolerate the pain and discomfort of the condition for more than a day
or two before they seek constipation cure. The majority of time,
laxatives are the key to ending short term constipation. But where
child
constipation
is concerned, just identifying the condition is not
always so easy—let alone treating it.

Signs Of Baby Constipation

September 3rd, 2008

One
of the surest ways to spot baby constipation is within the stool
itself. Dry or hard stool is a definite indication of constipation
caused by lack of fluid. Also, if the stool size has decreased and a
lot of little “pellet-like” pieces are present when
changing a diaper, baby constipation should be suspected.

Believe
it or not, baby
constipation
may be present if your baby has a diaper rash. One
of the well-known causes of constipation is delaying bowel movements.
When a baby has a diaper rash or even a cut on the anus, baby
constipation may result because the child will withhold bowel
movements to avoid the pain. This will actually worsen the
constipation and lead to an even greater blockage.

Finally,
a parent should definitely notice if their infant is not having the
frequency of bowel movements as they used to. In general, baby
constipation will be diagnosed if 4 or more days have gone by without
a movement. The exception to this rule is for babies who have been
breast fed as they can go 7 days between movements and be considered
normal. Still, a parent will know when their child is going longer
than normal between bowel movements and should consider it a possible
sign of baby constipation.

Difference between Child Constipation and Adult Constipation

February 20th, 2008

Constipation is a no minor problem and constipation in children is a frequent problem that parents must face. Child
constipation is just like adults because symptoms are just the same such as
infrequent bowel movement, pain or discomfort when passing stool and having
abdominal pain when having bowel movement. However, most adults would use
laxatives to treat constipation but using it to children may cause bigger
problems than the bowel incontinence it is supposed to relieve.

Getting The Right Help For Baby Constipation

January 19th, 2008

Due to the difficulty
administering the laxatives as well as their effect upon the body,
harsh laxatives made with chemicals are simply not an option with
baby constipation. While gentle suppositories are generally
recommended for infants and toddlers because they are easy to manage.
However, any product used to cure baby constipation should use
all-natural ingredients as they are gentler on the body and lead to
less side effects. Also, it is highly recommended that you take the
child to a doctor in order to remove the blockage and check for
physical causes of the condition especially if baby
constipation
persist beyond 3 or 4 days.
