March 15th, 2008

Periodontitis
also called pyorrhea it is a severe gingivitis. It is identified
by swelling and redness of gums, basically it is an infection in the
gums. It is commonly identified with redness and swelling of gums and
even bad breath. If left untreated it may result to progressive tooth
and bone loss. It is also thought to occur in people already having
gingivitis. The primary cause of gingivitis is the accumulation of
bacteria in the gums. With some people gingivitis develops into
periodontitis.

There
are some medical conditions associated with periodontitis and these
are diabetes, HIV/ AIDS, pancreatic cancer, Down syndrome and any
disease that reduces the number of white blood cells in the body.

Oral
health hygiene plays a very important role in preventing
gingivitis-periodontitis. Regular brushing and flossing of teeth
prevents the growth of bacteria in mouth and using natural health
care products aid in preventing bacteria build – up. Regular visit
to the dentist for check up and professional cleaning can lead into
early detection of oral health diseases.
